When it comes to design and premium feel, the iPhone XR may not quite measure up to its more expensive counterparts, the iPhone XS and XS Max. While both series boast sleek designs with aluminum edges, the XR's stainless steel edges give it a slightly less premium vibe.

One area where the XR falls short is in its display. The iPhone XR has a lower-resolution screen (1,792 x 828) compared to the iPhone XS (2,436 x 1,125) and XS Max (2688 x 1242). Additionally, its LCD screen doesn't offer the same level of perfect black levels and ultrawide viewing angles as OLED screens found on the XS and XS Max.

However, Apple's new Liquid Retina display technology on the XR does allow it to reach the edges of the screen, resulting in a colorful and vibrant display. While it may not be on par with OLED, it still looks great in person.

So why would you want to pay more for an iPhone XS or XS Max? For one, they offer longer battery life. In our testing, which involves continuous web surfing over LTE, the XR lasted 11 hours and 26 minutes, while the XS Max lasted 10 hours and 38 minutes and the XS just 9:40.

Another advantage of the higher-end iPhones is Face ID. While there's a bit of a learning curve to adjusting to life without a Home button, the front TrueDepth Camera on the XR makes it easy to unlock your phone with a simple swipe up.

Finally, if you're looking for more color options, the iPhone XR offers six choices (White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Coral and Red), while the XS is limited to just three (Silver, Space Gray and Gold).

Ultimately, the decision between these phones comes down to what matters most to you. If battery life and a wider range of colors are your top priorities, the iPhone XR may be the best choice. But if you're willing to pay more for premium design and features like OLED displays and Face ID, the iPhone XS or XS Max may be worth the investment.
